We use regularly a multi-story car park in central Derby. The six charge bays are on the ground floor inside the gated Council provision and provide a quick exit and entry while I complete a quick errand.

A workman today stated I couldn't park in a bay unless I was charging? I asked him if he was a car parking Council official - no, no signs or notices anywhere, no advisory on the charger (BP x6) so just wondered - whats the status or is there an unwritten courtesy rule?

PS: Only one other bay was being used!

Its upto the car park operator to set the rules. However typically, charge bays are for charging, not parking. Some parking operators will fine you for parking in a charging bay. The only way to know for sure is to ask them. Round by me, the council certainly issues tickets for parking in a charging bay.

Unfortunately for reasons of cheapness, charging bays are often placed "near the door" as it were, and thus become enticing for people to park in them instead.

You will undoubtedly after some time driving your EV experience the frustrating situation of needing/wanting a charge, and the bays being blocked by cars not actually charging in them. ICE drivers probably just dont care, but EV drivers should know better. and i know your saying "oh but only one was in use", but thats similar to saying you'll park in a disabled bay because theres 5 empty ones and your only nipping into the shop...

Oh dear, stay there only when charging. Use common sense.

Poor etiquette. Just because there are free bays when you park doesn’t mean that two or three cars needing a charge won’t turn up as soon as you’ve walked away. And those drivers would be justifiably annoyed by a charger being blocked like that.

Some carparks have a fine for not charging (or charging complete but still occupying the space after a reasonable time period). The purpose of those spaces is for charging, nothing else.

Why do you even need to ask?

And how will these answers change your behaviour?

It's well know fact public charging can be difficult so let's make it worse by using the bays for parking purposes only ffs.

As others have said, please don’t park in an EV spot if you’re not going to charge (and please go and park somewhere else when your charge is complete).

They aren’t there for our “parking convenience”. No one would leave their car parked at a petrol pump; EV charging spots are no different ;-)
