Trip to the South West from the Midlands
Be really handy for me if they pop one in at Sainsbury’s in Bude. But I guess they’ve already got the Tunnel so can’t ask for too much more
North East Cornwall is still a bit lacking in reliable high power chargers (BP in Holsworthy often only charges at 15-20 kW for example). But I suspect there are more on the way, maybe just over the border into Devon at Barnstaple.

I often use the Podpoint ones at the farm shop in Lifton. Good to know the Tesla ones are now available too - cheers!

Use ABRP and take some time to properly set it up. You can set it to avoid sites with single or small numbers of chargers and tell it how much you want left when you arrive and it'll give you a charging plan. Once you have the plan, look at the map, either in ABRP or one of the other charge mapping services like Zapmap or Plugshare. Look around the proposed location for backup options to keep in your pocket just in case. Check for any comments about the chargers its specified, sometimes you'll find they're crap for one reason or another.
If you have Octopus, also worth signing up to Electroverse, as they have some nice discounts on there. Circa 13% off Ionity for instance.

Perfect, that's right on my route. Do you happen to know if it's better to use a visa card or an electroverse card? Is there a different price for each? I suppose what I'm asking is, if chargers allow you to pay by credit card or bank payment card, why would you bother with anything else? I hate all the account/membership stuff. If I use a public charger, I just want it to be like a pertrol station where anyone's petrol will do. You don't need to be part of the club and if you're not part of the club, go somewhere else.

Electroverse gives you an 8% discount (IIRC) at MFG, so worth using in preference to a credit cardChangoMutney wrote: ↑Mon Apr 15, 2024 12:41 pmPerfect, that's right on my route. Yep - I try Electroverse first, then contactless credit card if it doesn't work. If it's Ionity then Powerpass. Although I have Shell and a couple of other cards in the car, I rarely use them. Generally I try to charge at Instavolt, Gridserve (or MFG and Applegreen are starting to become more common, and are pretty fast and reliable).

Electroverse gives a 5% discount at Ionity and a 20% discount at Osprey between 7pm and 11 pm. There is occasional plunge priciing at Ionity, Osprey and a few others when electricity prices are low. Last week there was a period with 20% discount.
If you have an Octopus Go account linked to your Electroverse account then there is an additional 5% discount on all charging. For an Intelligent Octopus Go account the additional discout is 8% so a total of 13% for Ionity making it 65p/kWh rather than the 74p/kWh for Powerpass Charge Free or Simply Charge (£4.99 per month) tariffs. Without IO/IOG discount the Electroverse rate for Ionity is 71p/kWh so still cheaper than Powerpass unless on the Charge Faster (£13.99 per month) tariffs. Electroverse does not introduce its own blocking fees, unlike Powerpass.
Apart from the discounts previously mentioned, Electroverse generally matches the operator fees. It is worth having a back up to contactless cards for payment as there are occasions when the card reader on the chargers is faulty and having an RFID card or app to initiate charging is useful. We have experienced that problem twice in 3 years. I have had more problems at petrol stations with an ICE car, however they usually will take cash which is not an option with EV chargers. The RFID card is useful if in an area with power mobile data connections.
My preference order is Electroverse (credit card payment through the Electroverse account), contactless credit card, operator account where I have one (Chargeplace Scotland, ESB etc) then Powerpass (Charge Free). In every case where I have had the option to use Powerpass or another option, Powerpass has been the most expensive. Often the Charge Faster tariff is more expensive, or just matches the operator rates at the chargers I use. Charge Faster would only offer an advantage if we were using Ionity extensively.

Ooh - I didn't know that about Electroverse and Ionity. I'll use that instead now. However there's only really one Ionity charger locations anywhere near the routes I tend to drive, which is a shame.
