I'm new to EVs and have had my 21-plate Enyaq 60 for a week now. I did ask Skoda for advice but wanted a more personal perspective.

We rent our home, and our landlord isn’t happy with a charger being installed (even if we left it when we moved), which is understandable. We’ve got a Third Rock granny charger for emergencies.

Twice a week, I use a free 22kW charger while taking my daughter to ballet—once for about 2 hours and another time for around 1 hour. Since it’s not close to home, I can’t just leave the car charging and return later.

We’ve also had to use a rapid charger twice so far.

Would it be best to rely on the 22kW charger during ballet twice a week and top up with the granny charger? Or should I just stick to the granny charger alone?

Is there a limit to how often I should charge per week to help preserve the battery? What’s the recommended frequency?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated—thanks!

I would say do what is convenient. If you can get free charging a couple of times a week then take advantage of it, and top up with the granny whenever required.

Sticking to just the granny isn't going to make any discernible difference (good or bad) to battery degradation.

The general rule of thumb is to keep the battery between 20% and 80% charged when/if you can and it suits your travel patterns, but occasional charging to 100% is absolutely fine.

Frequency of charging really depends on your travel patterns and daily/weekly mileage. Don't overthink it!

Depends how much driving you do! A granny charger should put in ~10 miles of range an hour. With a 5 hour off-peak window, that’s 50 miles of cheap driving a day.

Note that the Enyaq doesn’t take 22kW; AC charging maxes out at 11kW so you’re probably getting similar in one of those sessions to what you’d get overnight with a granny charger.

The general rule with charging is to keep it between 20 and 80% where possible. I don’t know whether there’s any evidence to suggest more smaller charges is better/worse than fewer bigger ones.

Also, check out Co-charger. There might be someone locally who can let you use their charger.

Intelligent Octopus can be quite generous with the window. Often get a 8+ hour window.

Thank you so much! I think I am over thinking it 🤣 I am thinking I will need to charge 4/5 times a week unless it's the school holidays it might be more 5/6 maybe at the most.

I have now looked at Co charger and luckily someone is only a 5 minute walk away, so maybe just take up on that a little aswell.

Thank you so much everyone.

I was thinking have I made the right decision. 100% overthinking it. Just seen so much information that's conflicting. About potentially charging daily being bad for the battery.

With slow charging I think it's fine to just leave it plugged in all the time, as long as the charge limit is kept at 80% or under.

I'm presently entirely granny charging my new 85x at home till I maybe install a faster wall charger in spring.
